Systems perspective in road safety - An improvement of novice driver training in India

چکیده
The road accidents and the resulting fatalities are on a rise in India. Statistics point out that a large majority of the accidents involve novice drivers, and are a result of human errors. In order to study the causes of these human errors, we aim to study the effect of driver training on novice drivers. Improper visualization of road transportation system, overestimation of driving skills and underestimation of risks involved in driving may also have a strong influence on driver errors. Under this premise, this paper presents the summary of a study that draws its inferences from the perceptions of drivers about road transportation system and its associated safety aspects, in order to understand the role of driver training in risk estimation and perception in novice drivers. A comparative study on the perceptions of experienced and novice drivers, and a direct observation study of the current driver training methods is conducted identify the gaps in the safety perceptions of novice drivers. The study also brings to notice the importance and a lack thereof systems perspective in the current training methods of novice drivers.

Road traffic injuries (RTIs) are the sixth leading cause of deaths in India and about 400 deaths take place every day due to road traffic accidents. The present paper analyses the data of the India’s National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) to assess the burden of RTI. In addition, it reports the health systems research initiated by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). As per NCRB data, in...

Novice, adolescent driver overrepresentation in road crashes is a well-documented, robust phenomenon. Driver education and training are popular but controversial interventions that have rarely demonstrated safety benefits. Flight simulators have proven effective in pilot training and the decreasing costs and increasing quality of simulation technology make driving simulatorbased training (DSBT)...

Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) have the potential to accomplish a major contribution to road safety. This is valid for minor crashes to very severe accidents with personal injuries. The Allianz Centre for Technology attends the development of new driver assistance systems by carrying out accident analysis and estimating the efficiency of new ADAS. In this context new ADAS from differ...
متن کاملSelf-Awareness and Self-Monitoring: Important Components of Best Educational Practice for Novice Drivers
Self-awareness and self-monitoring of one’s driving behaviour are important higher-order cognitive skills considered in the National Road Safety Action Plan 2007 and 2008 to be integral to best educational practice for novice drivers. They hold a key status in several theoretical models of driver development, and are characteristic of current driver training programs in Scandinavia. They are ga...
